The Coalition against Bayer Dangers urges the European authorities to refuse to approve the importation of rice Liberty Link (LL62), manufactured by Bayer CropScience. LL62 rice has been modified with a gene that allows plants to resist glufosinate, a herbicide manufactured by Bayer under the brand names Basta and Liberty.

Approval import from Europe of genetically modified rice, would allow Bayer to promote their cultivation in developing countries. This could lead to contamination of the types of rice grown in the areas of origin, a decrease of diversity and may even jeopardize the main source of food in poor countries. The negative impact would fall most heavily on its most vulnerable sector, that of the poor in rural areas.

With the LL62 rice, the doses would be increased use of glufosinate thus increasing the chances that dell'erbicida residues remain in the rice. According to an evaluation of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), glufosinate carries a high risk to mammals. The substance is classified as genotoxic. The new EU regulation banning all pesticides CRM (carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic for reproduction) for Class I and II. Glufosinate is classified as a Category II reprotoxicants.

Bayer has applied to import rice, LL62, back in 2003. The request was rejected several times by the Council of Ministers of the European Parliament, but has not yet been withdrawn. Bayer is seeking approval also Brazil, South Africa, India and the Philippines. Until now import approvals have been granted in Europe mainly for feed. Liberty Link Rice would be the first GMO product for direct human consumption.

Philipp Mimkes the Coalition against Bayer Dangers (CBG), which for 30 years is monitoring the Bayer: "We demand the strict application of the precautionary principle in respect of genetically modified rice , please do not approve the import in the European Union LL62 rice as there is sufficient evidence that the rice does not cause harm to human health or the environment " See also:
